I want to be crafty. I want to buy that cute, worn out vintage dresser at the flea market, strip off all the old paint, sand it down and lovingly coat it with new, fresh paint....twice!
I read about making your own wall paper with a rubber stamp block, and a roll of 90 pound drawing paper, and have frequently carried out the actions in my head: printing the image, sweating over the stamp block with an exacto knife making sure to get it perfect, carrying the 90 pound paper up the flight of stairs rolling it out, getting messy and dirty while jazz music plays in the background.
In this day dream I am always wearing jean overalls spattered with paint, rolled up at the bottom, with one strap hanging off my shoulder, my hair in a messy, yet sexy up do, my glasses slide down to the edge of my nose as i peer down at my project with much criticism, insight and pride...
As you can tell, I get lost day dreaming, congratulating myself on how lovely my apartment looks all because I finally got off my ass and made some cute custom made wall paper, or finally made that bookshelf I had been thinking about.
Truth is I dont have the space or money to be making such awesome DIY projects. Living in a tiny Parisian apartment, with a not so tiny Parisian rent makes carrying out a big project like above challenging. In the long run making your own things is a way to save money but intentionally you got to spend money and invest on some supplies: a power drill, brushes, rollers, tarps, exacto knifes, buckets, paint etc.
But for now I work with what I got.
Being broke requires you to get creative in most aspects of life: cooking, dining, drinking, clothing, and decor is not exception.
Observe....
I finally completed my "box project" which is what I referred to it for weeks. I read an article a month or so back about how a simple wooden box can be transformed into a book shelf, shadow box, and much more. To my surprise buying a simple wooden box in France can cost up to 15 euros, so I got creative and asked my friends for any old wine boxes. Antione gave me this cute, shallow box that once held 3 bottle of wine.
Spray Paint (2 euros)
Weeks ago at a flea market I bought a can of spray paint, I came home and sprayed my box right away! I felt excited "Yea, progress!" And for the next 4 weeks this is the exact state that my box would remain in. I was convinced that I needed a power drill to mount the box on the wall, and so my little box remained empty and horizational for weeks to come.
Rope from Cat tree (free)
Last night while watching a rather long, boring film I caught myself staring right above my television, at my huge, white, blank wall. "Damn I just want to get my little box on there! I need some color, but I dont have a power drill..." Then it hit me " I will hang it like a picture frame with string, no, better a rope!" The only rope in my apartment comes from the posts of my cat tree, the rope is wrapped around the three post so my kitties can satisfy their need to scratch. Off came 6 inches of rope and was directly attached to back of my box with 4 staples.
Owl, Printing Press Letters ( .50 cents, 2 euros)
I love tiny, cute and useless things. So when I found this miniature owl figurine for .50 cents it was a no brainier...it would be mine! The hungover morning after my birthday party William, Nico and I went to the flea market in Montmartre, there we found a vendor who sells letters from old printing presses at 1 euro a piece, I got a"W" for William and a "C" for Cently, I will soon return for and "H" for Hemingway. Duh!
Yogurt Jars, and Maple leaf (free)
Living in Canada for 2 years I was bound to press a maple leaf or two, and I am grateful I did. Autumn in Paris is lovely but fall on the eastern coast of Canada is incomparable. This little orange leaf reminds me of that. Seeing that my box was still far too empty I searched for something in my apartment to fill the void. Finally I found the tiny yogurt jars I had saved. Im a weirdo, I save little boxes, bottles and jars. Initially I have no idea what I will do with them but later they reveal their destiny!
And there you have it, a DIY project for under 5 euros (or more if you wanna be a jerk and point out the candles, nail and actually BUYING the yogurt) but you get the idea! Never underestimate the creativity that lies in being broke, its what has created some of the greatest works.
